The Thomas Nesbitt Scholarship Fund envisions a future where every student, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to pursue higher education and creative growth. By supporting academic pathways, artistic development, and community engagement, we honor Bishop Nesbitt’s legacy while empowering the next generation to lead with purpose, passion, and vision. We strive to break down financial barriers, create equitable opportunities, and cultivate leaders who use their gifts to inspire change in their communities and beyond.
Our Story
The Thomas Nesbitt Scholarship Fund was established in Brooklyn, NY, through the Apostolic Gospel Church of Christ. With a mission to support high school graduates in their pursuit towards higher education. During his 38 years as Bishop, Thomas Nesbitt Sr. awarded more than 20 scholarships. Having experienced the challenges of the education system and faced obstacles of the deep south during the Civil Rights era, Bishop Nesbitt understood the transformative power of education.. His time and efforts were spent empowering young people, strengthening communities, and inspiring youth leadership through advocacy and engagement. Whether delivering a sermon on Sunday or engaging directly with residents of low income neighborhoods, his message was always clear: education is a pathway to empowerment. His dedication left a lasting impact, planting seeds of opportunity that continue to grow long after his lifetime.
Today, the Thomas Nesbitt Scholarship Fund continues under the leadership of his granddaughter, Deandrea Nesbitt. Ms. Nesbitt is a Visual Artist and English Language Arts educator, deeply committed to equity in education. Inspired by her grandfather’s legacy and his passion for artistic photography, she has expanded her work into the fine arts and education fields. While advocating for students to pursue paths beyond high school, she recognizes the challenges faced by students in urban and low income communities where opportunities and funding are often limited. Her vision honors tradition while embracing innovation, ensuring the scholarship evolves to meet the needs of today’s students and the challenges they face.
The Thomas Nesbitt Scholarship Fund expansion now provides resources for art students by helping cover the cost of materials, exhibitions, collaborative projects, and showcase opportunities. Continuously encouraging academics, creativity and investing in the next generation of artists, activists and leaders. By bridging education and the arts, the fund continues to honor Bishop Nesbitt’s legacy while opening doors for future generations to thrive.
